Maria Trens – at first glance a typical, quiet South Tyrolean mountain village with a little less than 1,000 inhabitants, a pilgrimage church and lots of nature. Here, in the heart of the Upper Eisack Valley and only a few kilometres south of the alpine city of Vipiteno, time seems to pass more slowly. A second glance, however, reveals that appearances can be deceptive: in fact, Maria Trens and its surroundings offer a wide range of activities.
Maria Trens Pilgrimage Church
Only a few steps away from our Hotel Post, you will find a very special place of peace and harmony: the pilgrimage church of Maria Trens, one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in South Tyrol and a very rich attraction from an art-historical perspective. Since time immemorial, believers from all over the region have come to this church (also known as Trenser Muater) in search of comfort, help and guidance. In a side chapel inside the church (Gnadenkapelle – Chapel of Mercy), there is a sculpture of the Madonna made of Swiss pine wood dating back to 1470.
Tasso Castle
From the Hotel Post an easy trail with wonderful views leads to the majestic Tasso Castle, which towers high above on a rocky promontory. Today, the building from the 12th century is one of the best preserved medieval castles in South Tyrol. Once in the castle, you can visit ten perfectly preserved rooms, including the Green Hall with late-Gothic ornamental paintings. Furthermore, there is a torture chamber, a court room and an underground dungeon.
Alpine city of Vipiteno
How about a visit to the charming Fugger city? Just a few kilometres from Maria Trens, the rural idyll turns into a charming city atmosphere. In Vipiteno you can stroll through the alleys of the Old Town, surrounded by historic houses with their characteristic bay windows and colourful facades, go shopping in many little shops under the arcades or enjoy a tasty aperitif in one of the many city cafés and restaurants.
